Optimism and Frustration as Wellspring Sport Teams Enter the New School Year
From thunderous crowds to the thrill of competition, sports teams have long been a staple in Wellspring, offering students a chance to shine on the field – which, over the years, have amassed an impressive amount of trophies and accolades. Recently, Wisers TV’s reporters have conducted interviews with members of Wellspring sport teams, who relayed their training difficulties, upcoming fixtures, and aspirations for this school year.
Football
Football stands as one of the most popular sports in Wellspring. Under the guidance of concurrent Wellspring Football coaches, Mr. Lai and Mr. Phuc, both middle and high school football teams enter a new school year with varying obstacles, academic challenges, and most importantly: renewed determination for the upcoming District tournament.
A new school year means new faces. Minh Quân, a veteran of the High school team, shares his thoughts on 10th graders joining their ranks: “Our new teammates, they haven’t totally caught up with the rest of the team yet, but that’s completely normal. We’re all here to support each other and build a cohesive unit.”
“We will definitely win this year! Spirits are high as this is among one of our last few years together,’’ Quân reassures when asked about the team’s ambition for this year.
However, the team faces a new challenge regarding squad depth: there are simply not enough players in every position. This may pose difficulties in the long term as the team is expected to compete with 11 players on the field for the upcoming District tournament. The team’s senior, Gia Minh discloses the team’s plan: “I think everyone should dedicate more time for practice [in the 11-player format], there are still many missing practices.”
As the mid-term exams close in, and details about the District tournament remain unclear, the Wellspring community stands behind the team, and hope that both our school’s football teams pull through and get far in the competition.
Other sports (Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton)
District tournaments for other sports such as basketball, volleyball, and badminton are currently being postponed due to departmental reasons as of now. Regardless, our sports teams won't be easily deterred and are continuing to train to stay prepared for their next big match.
Not only is it fun to watch and root for our competitive sports teams, the school spirit they inspire brings students together, promoting pride in our institution and the representative teams alike. It is a powerful connector, a way for students to bond and unite, promoting a sense of community and belonging within Wellspring Saigon. WISer TV sends our best wishes and good luck to the talented players that are representing our school!
